Celebrating National Doctors’ Day with HAP: Finding the Right Doctor for you
Every year on March 30, we celebrate National Doctors Day—a time to honor the dedication, expertise and compassion of physicians across the country. At HAP, we’re especially proud of the doctors who serve our members across Michigan’s hospitals and provider networks. From diagnosing illnesses to offering emotional support, they play an essential role in keeping our communities healthy.
A brief history of National Doctors’ Day
National Doctors Day dates back to 1933, when Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of a physician in Georgia, suggested setting aside a day to recognize doctors’ selfless service. The first observance included mailing greeting cards and placing flowers on the graves of deceased physicians. In 1991, President George H. W. Bush signed legislation designating March 30 as National Doctors Day. Today, health care organizations across the country join in honoring these indispensable professionals.
Why the right doctor matters
Choosing a doctor goes beyond finding someone who can treat an illness. It’s about finding a partner in your health journey. The right doctor will guide you through prevention, diagnosis and treatment, always considering your lifestyle and preferences. HAP is committed to helping you locate the best-fit physician so you’re not only receiving top-quality care but also feeling confident and comfortable with your choices.
How to choose the best doctor for you
If you’re searching for a new doctor, here are a few key points to keep in mind:
- Credentials and experience: Make sure your potential doctor holds relevant board certifications and has experience with any specific conditions or health needs you have.
- Network coverage: Verify that the doctor you’re considering participates in your HAP plan’s network. Since HAP covers 96 percent of providers in Michigan, there’s a high likelihood your ideal doctor is in-network, helping you minimize out-of-pocket costs.
- Location and accessibility: Consider the doctor’s office location and hours of operation. Proximity and convenient scheduling make it easier to stick to regular checkups and follow-up visits.
- Communication style: A strong doctor-patient relationship relies on clear, respectful communication. Look for a physician who listens attentively and explains medical information in a way that makes sense to you.
- Referrals and reviews: Ask friends, family or coworkers for recommendations. Reading online reviews can offer insight into other patients’ experiences but remember that everyone’s needs differ.
Plan options that fit your life
- PPO plans: Ideal if you want broad access to a wide range of doctors and specialists.
- HMO plans: Great for those who appreciate coordinated care and cost savings.
- High-performing networks: Offer a balance of affordability and excellent care quality.
With these options, you’ll be equipped to select a health care plan and doctor that align perfectly with your unique needs and preferences.
Here’s to celebrating our doctors and empowering you to choose the healthcare professional who’s just right for you.
